Grace is not something we achieve through effort—it is something we receive through faith. When we shift from striving to receiving, we begin to relate to God on His terms, not ours.

[00:00:00] Hello, welcome to your daily Grace by Timothy Wilder Foundation Series Episode 15 what Grace Is Grace is received, not achieved. [00:00:13] Grace is not something you climb toward. It is something you receive. [00:00:17] That distinction is easy to say, but difficult to live. [00:00:21] Our instincts are wired for achievement. We measure progress, evaluate effort, and look for ways to improve our standing. Left to ourselves, we naturally approach God the same way, assuming that if we just do enough, grow enough, or become enough, we will finally arrive. But grace does not operate on the principle of achievement. It operates on the principle of reception. [00:00:47] John captures this with remarkable simplicity. But to all who did receive him, John 1:12 the language is intentional. Not those who earned, qualified, or proved themselves, but those who received. The posture is not one of striving upward, but of opening empty hands. Grace is not accessed by reaching a certain level. [00:01:11] It is accessed by receiving what is freely given. [00:01:15] This runs directly against the framework of works based thinking. [00:01:20] Paul makes the contrast unmistakable. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. [00:01:29] Faith in this sense is not a work we perform. [00:01:32] It is the means by which we receive. [00:01:35] It does not contribute, it trusts, it does not achieve. It accepts. To clarify the difference even further, Paul uses the analogy of wages and gifts. [00:01:46] Now, to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift, but as his due. [00:01:52] Wages are earned, they are owed. They create a sense of entitlement because they are tied to performance. [00:01:59] But grace is not a wage, it is a gift. And a gift, by definition, can only be received. [00:02:06] This is where many subtle distortions creep in. We may affirm grace in theory, but still relate to God as if something must be achieved. [00:02:15] We measure our worthiness by consistency, by discipline, by how well we think we are doing. And while those things may have their place, they are not the means by which grace is accessed. [00:02:28] The moment we treat them as such, we shift from receiving to striving. [00:02:33] Receiving grace requires humility. It acknowledges that we do not bring anything to the table that earns what God gives. [00:02:41] It sets aside the need to prove, to qualify, or or to secure a position through effort. [00:02:48] Instead, it rests in what has already been extended. This is the boundary that keeps grace intact. The human response is not to achieve, but to receive. [00:02:58] Not to earn, but to trust, not to perform, but to accept. [00:03:03] And in that posture something profound happens. The pressure to achieve is replaced with the freedom to receive. [00:03:11] We stop trying to secure what has already been given, and we begin to live from what we have freely received. [00:03:19] Thanks for listening.
