Already and Not Yet

Eternal life is both a present reality and a future hope, given to us the moment we believe. Scripture teaches that we already share in Christ’s life while also awaiting the fullness of resurrection and renewal. This truth gives us confidence today and hope for what lies ahead.

[00:00:00] Hello, welcome to your Daily Grace. By Timothy Wilder Foundations Episode 69 Eternal Life Already and Not Yet Eternal life is both a present possession and a future hope. Scripture holds these two truths together without contradiction. We have eternal life now, and yet we will experience its fullness in the age to come. Jesus speaks to the present reality when he says, he who believes has everlasting life. [00:00:31] Eternal life begins the moment we believe, but its complete expression unfolds throughout eternity. [00:00:38] This already and not yet tension is woven throughout the New Testament. We already belong to God's kingdom, yet we await its full manifestation. Paul captures this beautifully when he writes, our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we eagerly await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 3:20 we are citizens now, but we await the day when Christ returns and the kingdom is revealed in its full fullness. Eternal life is both our present identity and our future inheritance. [00:01:09] The present aspect of eternal life means we already share in the life of Christ. We are already forgiven, already accepted, already made alive. The Spirit of God lives in us as the guarantee of what is to come. Paul describes the Spirit as a down payment when he says, the Spirit himself testifies with our Spirit that we are children of God. Romans 8:16 Eternal life is not something we hope to receive someday. [00:01:36] It is something God has already placed within us as a living witness of our relationship with Him. [00:01:42] Yet there is more ahead. [00:01:44] The future aspect of eternal life includes resurrection, glorification, and the renewal of all things. Our bodies will be raised, creation will be restored, and we will experience the fullness of God's presence without limitation. The life we have now is real, but it is only the beginning. The New Testament describes this future hope not as uncertainty but as certainty, something guaranteed by the resurrection of Jesus himself. [00:02:11] Living in the already and not yet shapes how we walk with God today. We live with confidence because eternal life is already ours. We live with hope because its fullness is still ahead. [00:02:23] We do not fear the future because the future is simply the unfolding of what God has already begun in us. Eternal life is not a distant reward it is a present reality moving toward a glorious completion. [00:02:37] This perspective brings balance to the Christian life. We enjoy what God has given us now, and we look forward to what he will reveal later. We rest in the finished work of Christ today, and we anticipate the day when faith becomes sight. Eternal life is both now and forever, present and future, rooted in Christ and guaranteed by his victory. [00:02:59] Thanks for listening.
