[00:00:00] Hello, welcome to your Daily Grace by Timothy Wilder Foundations Episode 19 Grace and Generosity Giving versus Obligation One of the things I have learned over the years is that two people can perform the exact same action for entirely different reasons.
[00:00:22] On the surface, the results may appear identical, but beneath the surface, the condition of the heart can be worlds apart.
[00:00:31] Giving is a perfect example.
[00:00:33] A person can give because they feel pressured. They can give because they fear disappointing God.
[00:00:41] They can give because tradition tells them they should. They can even give simply because it is expected.
[00:00:48] The gift may still be given, but obligation has a way of draining generosity of its joy.
[00:00:55] Paul addresses this directly in 2 Corinthians 9:7 each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver. What has always stood out to me is that Paul's concern is not merely that believers give. His concern is the spirit in which they give.
[00:01:19] God is interested in the heart behind the gift.
[00:01:22] This distinction runs throughout Scripture.
[00:01:25] In Malachi's day, people continued bringing sacrifices to God, but many of those offerings reflected a heart that had lost its love and reverence.
[00:01:37] They were giving God what was left over rather than offering their best. The issue was not that they had stopped giving. The issue was that giving had become routine and disconnected from relationship.
[00:01:51] I think that is a danger all of us face. Anything done long enough can drift from devotion into duty. We can pray because we should, attend church because we should serve because we should, and even give because we should.
[00:02:07] Before long, what once flowed from love begins to operate on autopilot.
[00:02:13] Jesus confronted a similar problem in Matthew 23:23.
[00:02:18] The religious leaders were meticulous in their outward obedience, and yet they neglected the deeper matters of the heart.
[00:02:26] Their actions checked the right boxes, but they often missed the relational reality God desired.
[00:02:34] That is why grace changes everything. Under the New Covenant, our relationship with God is not built upon obligation but upon his unearned favor. We are already accepted because of Christ. We are not trying to earn God's approval through our giving, nor are we attempting to maintain his affection by our generosity. The cross settled those questions forever.
[00:02:59] When that truth takes root, giving begins to change.
[00:03:04] Instead of asking, what must I give? We begin asking, how can I respond to such incredible grace?
[00:03:11] Hosea 6:6 captures God's heart beautifully, for I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.
[00:03:22] God's desire has always been relationship before ritual.
[00:03:26] He wants hearts that are captivated by his love, not people simply going through religious motions.
[00:03:33] Even Romans 12:1 reflects this perspective. Paul calls believers to offer themselves to God, but he begins with the phrase in view of God's mercy, everything flows from grace. First, surrender is a response. Service is a response. Generosity is a response.
[00:03:54] I think that is the difference between giving and obligation. Obligation focuses on the requirement. Love focuses on the relationship. Obligation asks, what do I owe? Love asks, what can I share? The beautiful reality is that God is not looking for reluctant gifts from reluctant hearts. He invites us to experience the freedom that comes from knowing we are already loved, already accepted already and already blessed in Christ.
[00:04:25] From that place, generosity becomes less about fulfilling a duty and more about expressing the grace we have so freely received.
